The Duke LAX Scandal, Part MMCMLXXIV

On this morning's local news, they gave the Duke LAX rape scandal a thorough going over. Even as the level of tension rises, there appear to be potentially serious holes developing in any potential case against the players. This is all still at a very early stage in the game, but one thing is clear: the DA, Mike Nifong, needs to stop working on his image and start working on the brass tacks of this case, before he completely fumbles the ball and things turn really ugly on the streets of Durham. He needs to be alot more circumspect and careful, reviewing the evidence in private, not in front of the mob, so that whatever conclusion he eventually reaches will become a part of the healing process, rather than exacerbate the wound. Maybe a crime was committed: in that case he needs to carefully and discretely build a case. And he needs to do so now: if he has the time to give all of these press conferences, he does not need any more time to go to the grand jury. If it looks like no crime was committed, he needs to explain that to the public in a professional and calm fashion.
