The Grapes of ...

I haven't had much to say about wine lately. That's a shame: I've had some good ones. Tonight's was a Parusso Barbera d'Alba Ornati 2001. It had dark rich imperial purple color. The aromas include a certain plum quality, stewed cherries, chocolate. On the palate it was very smooth, with nicely controlled but assured tannins. It has an odd sort of amarone-like quality. At $15 to $20, it is a pretty good deal. Actually, it's a very good deal. I've heard the 1999 is very nice as well. I think it would stand up well against rich, savory meat, like wild boar or roast leg of lamb.
