Achilles heal?

We've all heard about the importance (in my view overstated) of values voters in the 2004 Presidental elections. Many (including this author) have also written about the alarming trends confronting today's Democratic party. Today's NYTimes has an article about sidestepping evolution in the classroom. This is clearly a development with its core in Red States. The pressure to avoid evolution is provided by people who comprise an important Republican constituency. I wonder if their reliance on voters from this America is a source of vulnerability or strength for the Republican party? Certainly this sort of thing probably turns off secular, libertarian-leaning conservatives (such as yours truly). But the left in the Democratic party is so anathema to libertarian types that it makes you wonder whether the Democrats could ever capitalize on it.
