Heat

So this is the 10 day forecast for our neck of the woods, and it should serve as a cautionary tale to all of those from my original neck of the woods (the Northeast) thinking about moving down to the Southern Part of Heaven. The refrain we usually hear from those we left behind in New York, Jersey, Massachusetts, etc. is "I am so tired of the winters here...I want to move down where you are where it's warm". And indeed it is true: the winters in NC are comparatively warm.

The problem is that the summers are HOT!!! Now, people living in the aforementioned states tend to retort "Hey, we've reached 95 here in ______ as well; I can handle it".

The thing is, however, that where I grew up they have never had the kinds of stretches of days in the 90s or higher that occur essentially every summer here in North Carolina (hint: it only gets worse south of here: the Triangle is, on average, Alpine compared to Houston). And heat, I have noticed, is a cumulative kind of thing: your tenth day of temperatures in the low 90s is a lot harder to take than that first day was.

You see clearly the benefits of living in the South, but spend a bit more time thinking about the costs. I'm not putting it down (hey, you don't see me leaving). But it's always a bit tough to watch families that have moved down from the North as the reality of their first Southern summer hits them.
