Aloha, Dog Shit Girl
Well, it has been a while since I have posted. Sorry about that: I've been a little buried between travel and work. I'm writing this from a desk in the East-West Center at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. There's a story there, but it will have to come later.
For now I want to draw attention to the story of Dog Shit Girl, discussed among other places at Don Park's site. This is a strange sort of web vigilantism. I have mixed feelings about it. Her shameful behavior is another element of a tidal wave of un-checked anti-social behavior sweeping over our society (and apparently Korea's). On the other hand, the possibilities for abuse in this kind of setup should be obvious.
One thing should be made clear however: in the context she really had no right to privacy.
Update: Check out this discussion for all kinds of examples of the privatisation of monitoring and enforcement in Korea. See this article for a bit more background on the tradition of net vigilantism in Korea.
