The most unconventional of unconventional wars
The NY Times has a pretty interesting article about the roots Iraqi insurgency. There is also a headline article suggesting that some Sunnis at the heart of the insurgency are beginning to put out feelers regarding terms for a ceasefire. The problem is that in some sense these terms imply giving them more influence than they ever would ever have obtained democratically. As such it does sort of represent terrorist extortion of a democracy. It should be clear to anyone who has read this blog my sentiments regarding that. On the other hand, if we and the new Iraqi government are "reasonable", and we do meet these terms, there is a chance that these acts of good faith will end up emboldening and empowering those who behave in good faith in the Sunni community. The right course is not apparent.
