See, things do work out the way they should

It turns out that I am one rich bastard. In fact, I am in the richest 1% of all people on earth. If you count my wife and I as one person (as she does for the purposes of deciding whether I should have any say in the decoration of our new home), we are in the top one half of one percent.

Do you want to find out where you are in the grand cosmic material scheme of things? Then visit this cheap gimmick of a site.

(Interestingly, even at the crappy depths (from a financial standpoint) of graduate school I was still in the richest 10%.)

This site seems to be another tired Seventies-style EuroLeftist attempt to prick your conscience (look how rich you are, look how poor they are, its so unfair, .... donate some money). Fortunately, I am immune to this intellectual bad medicine: like Francis Dolarhyde and Simon Cowell (and most of the American Idol contestants who audition before Simon Cowell), I have no pity. I am thinking that I could easily twist this the other way. I could start paying people like assistants and RAs $5000 a year and, when they complain, say "Jesus you're greedy: I'm already paying you so damned much that you are in the richest 15% of all humans...what do you want?" See, this kind of thinking is why the Dick Cheneys and Eric Cartmans of the world will always come out on top.

Meanwhile, Matthew Yglesias has some thoughts about the distribution of income.

Just for kicks, I entered my salary of $1,200 per year (I'm a starving student these days), and the site came back with the following information:

You are in the top 36.21% richest people in the world.

There are 3,827,032,418 people poorer than you.
How do you feel about that? A bit richer we hope. Please consider donating just a small amount to help some of the poorest people in the world. Many of their lives could be improved dramatically or even saved if you donate just one hour's salary (approx $0.83)

Oh, and in case you’re interested you are the 2,172,967,582 richest person in the world.

According to these clowns, I make 83 cents an hour, and they're asking for donations?

I'm trying to figure out what's so annoying about your writing style. The fake high-brow style? The careless nonchalance in discussing big issues? The lack of depth and insight? So hard to get to the bottom of it. But it's bad.

Careless nonchalance...well, you know what they say about the world being a tragedy for those who feel and a comedy for those who think, right?

And, for your information, I was aiming more for fake gonzo lowbrow style.

I know someone named Flash. Don't sully a name that evokes fear, awe and wonder in pubs throughout the Irish American world.
